Quotes I Live By

by Sean St. Onge

Short blog today, but I was thinking back to a lot of the repetitive cues I give on a daily basis that are usually followed by some anecdote I have amassed over the past 34 years of my life. I spit these out along with MANY, MANY, MANY movie quotes. If you are a client of mine you would know this happens often and how I seemingly find a way to relate a Mitch Hedberg joke into “heartbeat goblet kettlebell carries” and make it work.

I know…I’m that damn good. It gets scary sometimes. To add to my point of using ridiculous quotes in opportune moments, take my high school senior quote for instance...“The Zen Philosopher Basho once wrote, a flute with no holes is not a flute, a donut with no holes, is a Danish.” IF you can name where that quote came from, you are, well almost, as cool as me. JK.

Yet here are some of the quotes and lyrics that help me on a daily basis that I have kept and have shaped me to be the wonderful nutbucket that I am. In no particular order…Enjoy!

“I’m sick of following my dreams man, I’m just gonna ask where they’re going, and hook up with them later.”- Mitch Hedberg, Comedian

“Please understand nearly every concept I hold near and dear has been stolen from others much brighter and better than me.” -Dan John, Strength Coach and Author

“Don't question authority, question everything.” -Jello Biafra, Spoken Word Artist, Musician, former leader and lead singer of the Dead Kennedys

“I believe that music is God’s voice.”-Brian Wilson

“I know that I am intelligent, because I know that I know nothing.”-Socrates

“I believe it was Socrates who said…I drank what?”-Val Kilmer as “Chris Knight” in “Real Genius”

“Consider this critic a cretin,

Just resting on laurels completely invented.

Word acrobatics performed with both harness and net.

I am so full of sh*&.”

– Propagandhi from Anti-Manifesto off the How to Clean Everything album

“I am nervous and anxious, it really counts this time

And you know all my favorite singers have stolen all of my best lines”

– Alkaline Trio from Blue Caroline off of the Good Mourning album

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”-Aristotle

“Laughter is the best medicine...unless you are a diabetic. Then, uhh, insulin.”-Norm MacDonald

“There's some beauty in this. Originally, all I had was a 53-pound kettlebell and a 70 pounder. So, when I trained, I had two options. The "lack of options" made me dig down harder for certain movements.”-Dan John

“Our songs have the standard pop format: verse, chorus, verse, chorus, solo, bad solo.  All in all we sound like the Knack and the Bay City Rollers being molested by Black Flag and Black Sabbath."- Kurt Cobain

"90% of success is simply showing up."-Woody Allen

“All the world's indeed a stage

And we are merely players

Performers and portrayers

Each another's audience

Outside the gilded cage”

-Rush from Limelight off of the Moving Pictures album

“The Iron never lies to you. You can walk outside and listen to all kinds of talk, get told that you're a god or a total bastard. The Iron will always kick you the real deal. The Iron is the great reference point, the all-knowing perspective giver. Always there like a beacon in the pitch black. I have found the Iron to be my greatest friend. It never freaks out on me, never runs. Friends may come and go. But two hundred pounds is always two hundred pounds.”-Henry Rollins, Spoken Word Artist, former leader of Rollins Band and Black Flag

“Respect is never demanded. Nor never should it be. It is commanded, by first giving respect.” -Bob Evans, Professional Wrestler, Life Coach (212 Member)

Which leads to one of my favorites…

“The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot.”-Carl Sagan, “Pale Blue Dot”

Specifically through these quotes, over the years I have felt many of my ideals and thoughts when I was younger are still true today, if not amplified.  What or who helped shaped who you are? Who or what inspires you to think, and do more? I hope this helped. I figured I would share a few things that may or may not be fitness related, yet gave you a small glimpse into the abnormal world I live in. :0
