Stick and Move: 4 Reasons Why You Should Box

by Kerry Taylor

Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Muhammed Ali, Rocky, “Yo Adriannnnnnnnnn!!!!”.  What comes to mind when you hear those names?  You guessed it, boxing.  In today’s blog I want to give you 4 reasons why you should lace up some gloves and go a few rounds on the heavy bag.

 Feel like a bad ass

Now I’m not saying go become a bully or anything, but after getting after it practicing one of the premier combat sports in the world, you will bring out a whole new level of confidence in yourself.  Everything that we may hide away will start to come out.  Putting together combos, being light on your feet and hearing the crack of the heavy bag when you connect that good punch, it just does something amazing to your psyche.  You will be walking around like a boss!!

Great stress reliever

Had a tough day? Things just didn’t go your way?  Well don’t just wallow in the misery of it,  just let it all out.  How about punching something? I knew you would smile, lol!  If you can decrease your stress and get those endorphins going, why not?  Punch yourself into an amazing mood and change your focus.  After hitting  the heavy bag for an hour, I know my mood is a million times better.

Exercise your brain

Learning how to box will not only do wonders for you physically, it will also give your brain a boost as well.  Learning how to throw a series of punches at a target non stop, that goes with corresponding numbers and cues will make the brain work over time.  1 - 1 - 2 - 3 - 6 - Slip - Slip - Roll - Roll - Hook - 2, try putting that together.  If you’re not intensely focused and dialed in, you will get lost.  Don’t know what any of that means, come try out a boxing workout with us.

Everything wrapped up in a nice package

Doing a couple of rounds of boxing will hit every muscle in your body.  Talk about functional training, in order to throw one punch everything has to work together.  Your feet must be alive, when you decide to throw your punch, your feet must pivot to bring your hips around, and send that power through your core and push all that created energy out by way of a punch.  There are zero isolated muscles in this action, even your pinky toe is working to help you stay balanced.

All in all if you’ve never tried boxing, I suggest you give it a shot. We currently have classes on Thursdays at 7am and 5pm. You won’t regret all the benefits you will gain from it.  Until next time, continue to live life 1 degree above the rest.
